Volunteering story - Marie Willeke
Intro
The MSc Food Business Management student shares how UWL's Leadership Programme enhanced her volunteering journey and aided her personal growth.
Main body
I would like to share with you how the Leadership Programme at the University of West London has influenced my volunteering, personal development and contribution to society. The programme, which explored theories and models of leadership, disability awareness, community support, sustainability and social responsibility, gave me a good foundation of knowledge and confidence to bring to my volunteering work.
Through the programme, I felt ready to get involved with Solidarity Sports. This organisation focuses on empowering disadvantaged children through sports and activities and the time I spent with them during the Easter project was incredibly rewarding for everyone. From playing football to doing arts and crafts, every moment I spent with the children was full of joy and inspiration. The leadership skills I had already acquired beforehand, such as effective communication, empathy and team coordination, helped me to connect better and faster with the children and to help them overcome their own personal challenges. It was so nice to see how the activities helped build the children's confidence.
Another great experience where I was able to apply the leadership skills I learnt was volunteering with Oxfam as a steward at this year's Isle of Wight Festival. Together with a team of 350 volunteers, we ensured the festival ran smoothly – from checking tickets to supporting accessibility platforms. One of the main focuses of UWL's Leadership Programme is social responsibility and community support, which is also reflected in Oxfam's mission to tackle poverty and promote climate justice.
All these experiences over the last few months have taught me many lessons in leadership, teamwork and social responsibility. It has broadened my horizons and awakened my passion to make a difference in the community.
I was also particularly proud when I received a certificate for my volunteering at the UWL awards ceremony at the end of the semester, symbolising the positive impact the leadership programme had on me.
