Working mum shows you can have it all with degree apprenticeships
Working mum, Amy Callaghan, has shown that you do not have to give up on education, after studying for a degree apprenticeship while working full time, running her own business, and raising a family.
Amy completed a Chartered Management Degree Apprenticeship course with the University of West London and is keen to show the benefits of studying alongside her role as an NHS contract manager.
After working in various administration roles within mental health care, she took on the challenge of studying for a degree, spending time at UWL alongside her role to build skills in all aspects of marketing, finance, and project management.
Amy said:
I left college over 15 years ago and I never expected to have the opportunity to go back into education, especially not without having to lose my earnings. I am so grateful to have the support of my workplace and the potential they see in me and my future.
It is a long time since I left college, so there was a lot to get my head around at the start with essays and referencing but you get so much help and the more you put in, the more you will get out.
I had to make adjustments to fit everything in, but there are so many benefits and I want to show that this is not just something for young people, anyone can use this route to enhance their careers or do more later in life."
As well as university resources and support, apprentices can access mentoring services and careers advice as they study.
Janet Rowson, Head of Degree Apprenticeships at UWL, said:
Degree apprenticeships offer a variety of courses to help people from all ages and walks of life to access education, upskill or completely retrain.
We offer courses in everything from healthcare to business management and the offer is expanding nationally all the time as we look to helping more people become highly skilled in their professions."
