Apply for a loan
The most common way to get funding for your undergraduate degree is to apply for a student loan.
If you are a UK/EU student, loans are available for tuition fee costs (tuition loans) and some of your living costs (maintenance loans).

Finance guidance for students applying through Clearing
If you've accepted a place at UWL through Clearing, you need to let the Student Loans Company know about any changes affecting your student finance application. This could include:
- if you've changed your university or course choice
- if your living situation for the academic year will change

What is a Tuition Fee Loan?
If you are a UK/EU student who meets certain criteria, you can apply for a Tuition Fee Loan from the UK government. This will cover the entire cost of tuition for every year of study, which means you do not have to pay any money towards your fees while you are studying.
The loan is not means tested so, unlike the Maintenance Loan for living costs, it doesn't matter what your household income is. You will pay back the loan only after you graduate and have an annual income above the set threshold.

How to apply for a Tuition Fee Loan
The application process varies depending on whether you are from England, Scotland, Wales, Northern Ireland or a country in the EU.
- Students from England should apply to: Student Finance England (Helpline: 0300 100 0607)
- Student from Northern Ireland should apply to: Student Finance NI (Helpline: 0300 100 0077)
- Students from Scotland should apply to: Student Awards Agency for Scotland (Helpline: 0300 555 0505)
- Students from Wales should apply to: Student Finance Wales (Helpline: 0300 200 4050)

It takes a minimum of six weeks for student loans to be processed so we strongly advise that you apply as early as possible to avoid delays.

Compelling Personal Reasons and when to apply
Student Loans Company will allow you a Tuition Fee Loan for each year of your course, plus one additional year.
However, if you have studied previously before coming to UWL, need to take a break from your studies more than once, or need to repeat or retake modules on multiple occasions, you may find that Student Loans Company will not provide you with a Tuition Fee Loan for some or all of your course at UWL.
In this case, if your circumstances have been affected by things such as:
- mental health
- illness
- bereavement
- pregnancy
- a caring responsibility
You can gather evidence of these issues and submit them to Student Loans Company in order to gain an extra year of funding for your studies.
It’s vital you send a cover letter with your evidence that includes your customer reference number (CRN) and explains the situation and how it affected your studies.

What is a Maintenance Loan?
The Maintenance Loan is designed to support full time ordinarily resident UK students and settled students with their living costs eg food, rent and travel.
The amount you can get depends on where you live, where you study and your household income.
Like the Tuition Fee Loan, the Maintenance Loan has to be paid back only when you have left university, are in employment and earning above a set threshold.

Continuing students must reapply for Student Finance for each year of your course.

Apply for a bursary or scholarship
We offer a number of bursaries and scholarships that can help towards your course cost. Many of these are given as grants, meaning you do not have to pay them back.

Earn while you study
Getting a part time job whilst you study can be a great way to earn some extra income and can help you develop skills for your future career.
We can help you find part time and flexible work both on campus and in the local area.
Save on travel costs
Travel in London can be expensive, so we provide a free shuttle bus between the Ealing and Brentford sites for all our students. The bus runs a regular weekday service between Ealing Broadway station, our Ealing site and our Brentford site.
It's only a 10 minute ride between our Ealing and Brentford sites and, because it’s free, you save up to £3 per return journey.
