College of Nursing, Midwifery and Healthcare student helps others prepare for clinical placements by sharing top tips in magazine

Intro

UWL student Michael Bartholemew has written the cover story for a recent edition of The Innovation, People and Practice (IPP) Magazine, entitled ‘10 top tips from an ODP apprentice: How to make the most of your clinical placements’.

Article body

Michael is a third-year Operating Department Practice (ODP) apprenticeship student at UWL’s College of Nursing, Midwifery and Healthcare (CNMH). ODPs care for patients undergoing surgery, preparing the operating theatre and anaesthetic, ensuring the surgical team have the equipment they need during an operation, and supporting patients as they recover.

My goal in writing the article was to share my experience as a student apprentice,”

Michael explains.

I've seen many students enter the healthcare setting without knowing how to apply themselves or adapt to their surroundings, and I felt I could help the next generation of students by sharing my first-hand experience.”

Edwina Morris, Course Lead and Senior Lecturer in ODP at CNMH, said:

Entering the clinical environment of the operating theatre for the first time can be a daunting experience for students. Michael's top tips will help them know what to expect. I'm so pleased they have been published.”

The IPP magazine is published by the Association for Perioperative Practice (AfPP), which supports theatre nurses, ODPs, Health Care Assistants and all those working in and around operating departments, setting standards and guidance on best practice.
