The International Centre for Hospitality and Aviation Resilience Management (ICHARM)
ICHARM provides an inclusive platform for interdisciplinary and impactful research exploring the interconnected industries of hospitality, tourism and aviation. The Centre emphasises ethical leadership, strategic resilience, human factors and innovative solutions to shared challenges.
The Centre’s goal is to address the most important and pressing issues in hospitality, tourism and aviation by fostering outstanding research, drawing on cutting-edge ideas and practices and collaborating with leading experts from both the academic and practitioner communities.

The Victor Ceserani Lecture Series
The Victor Ceserani Lecture series is named after Victor Ceserani MBE, former Head of School of Hospitality at the University of West London, and explores issues pertinent to the food and hospitality sector. Following the keynote speaker’s presentation, an industry expert panel discusses the issues covered in the lecture and offers the different stakeholders’ perspectives on them.

Members
Head of ICHARM - Professor Alexandros Paraskevas
Alexandros is a Professor in Strategic Risk Management and the Director of ICHARM. His hospitality industry background includes internal auditing and operations management positions for over 12 years with Marriott and Starwood. His academic background includes 14 years of service at the Oxford School of Hospitality Management (Oxford Brookes University).
Alexandros researches the governance and management of risks/crises both in an organisational and tourism destination context. A visiting scholar in Austria, Finland, Hong Kong, Mexico, Spain and Taiwan, he has worked with governments and tourism professionals on safety and security issues and on crisis communications strategies. He has led numerous hotel industry projects in the areas of risk, crisis, disaster management and business continuity and authored academic articles and book chapters in these topics.

Dr Amalia Tsiami
Amalia Tsiami is an Associate Professor in Food Science. With a BSc (Hons) in Food Technology and Nutrition, and a PhD in Physical Chemistry she is an active researcher in the field of nutrition focusing on the relationship between diet and health and the effects of dietary intervention on risk factors of cardiovascular disease. She is also interested on the role of nutrition and hydration in the wellbeing of the elderly population in healthcare setting as well as the effectiveness of nutrition in reducing the risk of dementia.
Amalia sits in editorial boards of numerous renowned journals including Food and Nutrition Journal and has published more than 50 full papers and conference proceedings.

Dr Elitza Iordanova
Elitza is a Senior lecturer in Tourism Management and a researcher on destination marketing and branding, sensory marketing, consumer behaviour, and reputation. Her academic career includes 8 years as a Senior Lecturer in Tourism and Aviation at Bucks New University With a degree (Mag. Rer. Soc. oec) from the Vienna University of Economics and Business Administration, she holds a PhD in Destination Marketing from Brunel University.
Elitza is a member of the editorial board of the European Journal of Tourism Research and is also a peer reviewer for a number of academic journals including the Journal of Tourism Management, Tourism Management Perspectives and the International Journal of Tourism Policy.

Dr Cristina Maxim
Cristina is an Associate Professor in Tourism Management, with extensive teaching experience in various higher education institutions in the UK. With a BA in Economics and an MA in Public Administration, she was awarded a VC scholarship to conduct a PhD research at the Cities Institute, examining the planning and management of tourism in London.
Cristina is the co-author of World Tourism Cities: A systematic approach to urban tourism, and the lead editor for the Handbook on Sustainable Urban Tourism. She is a Senior Associate Editor for the International Journal of Tourism Cities and regularly reviews papers for other international academic journals.
She regularly publishes articles in peer-reviewed academic journals and presents at recognised international conferences. Cristina is currently working on a number of research projects that look at world tourism cities, sustainable tourism, tourism planning and management, and local government.

Captain Martin Drake
Captain Martin Drake is a commercial aviation pilot and the Chairman of both the British Air Line Pilots’ Association and the European Cockpit Association Security Committees. He is a long serving member of the IFALPA Security committee and addresses the security concerns of more than 40,000 European professional pilots and sits on both the Stakeholders’ advisory group for aviation security to the EU commission and the European Civil Aviation conference security forum.
Martin sits on the UK National Aviation security Committee and the NASC Executive, a body that influences other UK governmental aviation security agencies. In these roles, he advances pilots’ views with the anti-terrorist and security agencies, as well as advising on the strategies that may be considered when police and airports are faced with security situations. He also advises on the hazards that RPAS and lasers represent to conventional aviation assets.
Captain Drake is in current flying practice as a British Airways B747 captain based at London Heathrow, having also flown the B737 series, the Twin Otter for the British Antarctic Survey, and various GA aircraft. He also has military service as a reservist in the UK Territorial Army. Prior to beginning his aviation career Capt. Drake was a police officer and at present sits as a Magistrate in the lower court system in the UK.

Dr Andy Kemp
Dr Andy Kemp is the Group Sales & Marketing Director of Bidvest Foodservice (Bidfood). Andy is known to many across the Foodservice sector not just for his role as Group Sales and Marketing Director of Bidvest Foodservice (Bidfood), but for his voluntary and charity work where he works tirelessly with the Industry’s two charities; Springboard and Hospitality Action (as well as many other charitable organizations’), focusing his energy around key issues such as holiday hunger, nutrition in youth as well as generation Y skills, future talent, careers and mentoring.
An experienced marketer and sales director, Andy’s career has seen him launch or relaunch many of the consumers favourite brands here in the UK and become an ambassador for Hospitality both inside Bidvest Foodservice (Bidfood) and outside – promoting the Industry as a whole to international audiences.
Andy’s passion for best practice, diversity, talent and skills development, and customer service, alongside his commitment to nutrition, health and wellness, has played no mean in shaping the future of Hospitality in the years to come. One of his proudest moments was being awarded a Fellowship of the Institute of Hospitality for ‘Services to Hospitality’ in 2004.

James Lemon
James Lemon, with the professional role of Global Strategy Lead, Channels & Distribution at IHG (InterContinental Hotels Group) and the Founder and CEO at The Growth Works, is a leading consultant helping a wide portfolio of start-ups and scale-ups to solve their growth challenges. He also supports a number of short-term rental and travel accommodation actors as a Partner at AJL Consulting.
James has been the COO of Hostmaker, a home-sharing business that merges interior design and property management with hotel-like yield management guest experience, services and technology, he grew the customer base to over 2,000 homes, delivering 3x growth in stays and revenues in 6 months, to 6,000 stays and £4m revenues monthly, expanding the geographical footprint of the company from 5 to 9 European and Asian cities.
Prior to Hostmaker, James led as VP the Commercial Strategy for Travelport, a travel technology business with a global footprint, processing hundreds of millions of bookings each year – connecting travellers and travel agencies with providers of travel like airlines and hotel chains. He has also been the Director of Global Strategy for 5 years at Intercontinental Hotels Group.
He has studied Politics and Sociology in the University of Warwick and he is an Associate Member in the Chartered Institute of Management Accountants (CIMA).

John Ludlow
John Ludlow is Chief Executive Officer at AIRMIC (Association of Insurance and Risk Managers) where has been a Director since 2012. Prior to his appointment John was a Director of the IRM and a Senior Adviser in Risk Management and Hospitality.
Previously, he was SVP and Head of Global Risk Management at InterContinental Hotels Group (IHG) where he established a successful track record with 15 years in risk management leadership roles, overseeing Corporate Risk Management, Hotel Safety and Security and Risk Financing. This was preceded by 15 years of senior operational leadership roles in hotels, restaurants and pubs. He is a Certified Fellow of the Institute of Risk Management and visiting fellow at a number of universities and hospitality management colleges.

Dr Tony Matharu
Dr Tony Matharu is the Founder and Managing Director of Grange Hotels and Founder and Chairman of Blue Orchid Hotels. A graduate in Law and Economics, he has always been a hotelier and his contribution to the sector has been honoured with the “Hotelier of the Year” award. A former winner of “Best Small Hotel Company” (Business Travel Awards), he has recently founded London’s latest luxury independent hotel chain: Blue Orchid Hotels under his Integrity International Group. He has received a “Special Recognition Award” for his “Contribution to London’s Success” and a “Technology and Innovation Award” (2014). He is also the Founder of Global Hospitality Services, an international hospitality consultancy, a Board Member of the London Chamber of Commerce and Industry and Chairman of the Asian Business Association.
Tony combines his passion for hospitality with philanthropy, sport and community engagement; as London Chairman of Lord’s Taverners, Vice President of Oracle Head & Neck Cancer Research Trust, Chairman of Integrity International Trust; and a Director of the London Business Improvement District - renamed “Bee London”. He holds various board and other positions in the Arts and Sport – including as a Patron of a London Film Festival.
A recipient of an Honorary Doctorate of Letters and a Fellow of ESCP Europe Business School, Tony is a regular adviser and commentator on entrepreneurship, business, hospitality and philanthropy.

Dr Meenal Sachdev
Dr Meenal Sachdev is the Head of Sustainability of Shiva Hotels and the Director of Shiva Foundation, a corporate foundation that aims to tackle and prevent human trafficking and modern slavery in the UK, which she co-founded in 2012 with her husband.
Having worked closely with ICHARM on the COMBAT project, the Foundation developed a ‘Stop Slavery Blueprint’, which was piloted and rolled out across all Shiva Hotels properties and has been credited as best practice by various anti-slavery organisations. The Blueprint helps provide hotels with practical measures to address modern slavery.
In 2015, Meenal was elected as the first Indian woman Councillor for Hertsmere Borough Council. In this role, she has been instrumental in laying the foundation for the establishment of the Hertfordshire Modern Slavery Partnership in May 2017, which Shiva Foundation now coordinates.
On top of her work in the UK, Meenal has also sought to support causes close to her heart in India. She co-founded the youth leadership NGO, Connect India, directing it for over 10 years. The aim of the organisation was to design and implement leadership and service-based programmes for young British Indians. Through Connect India and as a strategic adviser to the family foundation, GMSP Foundation, Meenal has worked on various rural and urban projects in India with a focus on women’s empowerment, education and human rights.

Dr Bert van Walbeek
Dr Bert 'Bow-Thai' van Walbeek has been a hotelier for 45 years and marketer of tourism for 35 years, a motivator and a 'master of disaster' for 25 years and a lecturer for 15 years.
While working for Sheraton hotels in Egypt he had to face the marketing opportunities of the Gulf Crisis and developed the "Back to Normal" concepts. In Thailand May 1992 he tackled the opportunities of another major crisis and initiated TAT’s 'The World, Our Guest'- campaign.
In 2003 he wrote a PATA information brochure on Risk & Crisis Management: “Expect the unexpected“. As a taskforce member he supported destinations in need, like Bali and Chengdu. Recently he coordinated the PATA Nepal Tourism Rapid Recovery Task Force, bringing volunteer resources together to produce the campaign "Nepal, back on top of the world".
His company, The Winning Edge, is presently handling Crisis Prevention and Recovery Management projects in Bahrain, China, Dubai, Mauritius, Chinese Taipei and, of course, Thailand. These assignments are mainly tourism industries related, but also cover various other industries like banking and financial services’ operations, bottling, transportation and water supply.
He lectures on this topic at the College of Innovation of Thammasat University and the Mae Fah Luang University in Chiang Rai and is a celebrated guest lecturer at universities in China, Dubai, Germany, Macao, Malaysia, the Netherlands, South Africa, Chinese Taipei and the United Kingdom.

Kim Ann Williamson MBE
Kim Ann Williamson, MBE, is a Senior Operational Business Manager for Crown Prosecution Service Cymru/Wales and Chair of the UK Modern Slavery Training Delivery Group with a career in the Civil Service spanning over 35 years.
Her international work includes leading the Wales/Albania ‘Task and Finish’ Group and working with the Home Office Modern Slavery Unit International Team on their work with ‘Source Countries’. Kim Ann collaborates with Council of Europe GRETA Experts, the International Centre for Migration Policy Development and the Office for Security and Co-operation in Europe to share the good practice she has developed in Wales.
Kim Ann is an approved subject matter expert by the International Centre for Migration and Policy Development in human trafficking and slavery having made presentations and delivered workshops at conferences and events in Albania.
In recognition of the work on the Modern Slavery agenda, Kim Ann was identified to be one of the 2018 Annual Top 100 Corporate Modern Slavery Influencers in the UK by MSA4 Construction.
In the Queens Birthday Honours 2018 Kim Ann was made a Member of the British Empire for her contribution to Law and Order for combatting modern slavery, human trafficking and Female Genital Mutilation.
Doctoral researchers

Arif Ahmed
Arif comes from Mymensingh, Bangladesh, has a BSc Honours and an MSc in Statistics, an MSc in Survey Methodology and Official Statistics, and an MSc in Public Health Sciences. He has worked as a research assistant at Karolinska Institute and teaching at UWL.
His doctoral research in “Food Business and Nutrition Science” explores the effects of dietary and lifestyle management on type 2 diabetes development among Ethnic minority adults living in the UK: A generational shift.
More specifically, he explores the changing pattern of fruit, vegetables, physical activity, smoking, and alcohol drinking habits over the generations and their effect on T2D development among South Asian adults. Further, Arif’s study aims to identify the barriers and facilitators they face improving and changing their lifestyle, which will help T2D development reduction.

Jin Cao
Jin comes from Qinghai, China, and has a BA in Tourism Management and an MSc in International Hospitality and Tourism Management. Her doctoral research is on “Gender Inequality in Male-dominated Professions: Women’s Work experience in the Hospitality Sector, Coping Strategies and Possible Interventions.”
Jin's research focuses on a significant challenge faced by women in male-dominated professions, particularly early in their careers, often obstructing their advancement to managerial roles. This obstacle, known as "the broken rung," hinders progress. Jin investigates gender inequality experiences, psychological impacts and coping strategies to overcome this hurdle.
In the hospitality sector, a deficiency of women in leadership roles is observed, both at corporate and operational levels, aligning with broader trends. Operational roles, such as hotel general managers, executive chefs, chief engineers and chief security officers, exhibit notable gender imbalances. Jin's study delves into the nuanced psychological effects of this inequality, women's adaptive strategies and the necessary organisational policies and support mechanisms for effective mitigation.

Nikia Hatami
Nikia comes from Tehran, Iran, has a BA (Hons) in Business Management and an MA in Hospitality Management. He has worked in the hospitality industry in the UK, Spain, and Iran.
His doctoral research investigates the acceptance and the use of smart technologies by senior tourists and the implementation of smart technologies by smart tourism destinations. More specifically he explores the underlying factors that influence seniors’ behavioural intentions, allowing for the development of targeted smart tourism applications to meet the usability criteria of senior tourists.
Nikia’s research will advance the understanding of the complicated mechanism that forms the behavioural intentions of seniors to adopt and use smart technologies and will provide a guideline on how to improve the implementation of smart tourism technologies by smart destinations.

Forough H Jonghani
Forough comes from Tehran, Iran, and has a MSc in Air Transport Operations and Management. She is currently working as a Global Transformation Risk Manager with a leading civil engineering company, delivering sustainable design, engineering and consultancy solutions for natural and built assets in over 70 countries.
Her doctoral research is on social evaluations at airports and explores how legitimacy, status, and reputation are critically evaluated by "interested parties" or stakeholders.
Forough’s study aims to develop and validate a framework model for airports to measure individual and collective perceptions of cognitive legitimacy, sociopolitical legitimacy, status and reputation.

Zed Karoui
Zed obtained a BA (Hons) in Hospitality Management and an MA in Luxury Hospitality Management from the University of West London. With over a decade of professional experience, Zed has contributed to the luxury hospitality sector in Africa, Europe and North America. He has held positions within renowned hotel brands including Marriott International, Hilton Worldwide and Maybourne Hotel Group.
Zed's doctoral research centres on the authenticity of Corporate Social Advocacy and Corporate Activism within the hospitality industry. Taking a case study approach, he investigates the authenticity of corporate claims concerning trans-inclusive workplace environments within the wider LGBTQ+ hotel corporate policies. His objective is to formulate a structured approach for assessing the genuineness of such and other advocacy claims.

Szymon Lara
Szymon comes from Poland, holds a FdSc in Culinary Arts Science, awarded by London South Bank University, BA in Culinary Arts & Business Management from Middlesex University London (in collaboration with Westminster Kingsway College, and MA in Food Business Management received from University of West London. He has worked as a professional chef for many years, including luxury hospitality, large-scale events and running his own catering micro-business.
His doctoral research is on “Increasing Food & Nutrition Security through Diversification of the Supply Chain with Forgotten Edibles” and explores the aspects of utilisation of neglected and underutilised varieties of legumes, in the fight against loss of biodiversity and in building resistance to food security threats.
Szymon’s research is being carried out in collaboration with Royal Botanic Gardens, Kew and encompasses archival research of old varieties of crops native to Britain, cultivation, and laboratory analysis of the yields. The project also involves cooperation with various enterprises and individuals from across the agricultural and food sectors, all in hope of facilitating inter-sector communication for feasible increase of agrobiodiversity.

Nadine Muecklich
Nadine comes from Bonn, Germany, has a BA in Aviation Management and a MSc in Aeronautics. She works in the aviation industry for more than 8years, in organisations such as EASA, UPS at Cologne/Bonn airport, and currently for the Fraunhofer research institute.
Her doctoral research is on “Navigating the Safety Space of Resource Management for Secondary Sub-Systems in High Reliability Organisations – An Application to Aviation Ground Operations”. More specifically, she explores human-error factors within the less-visible, secondary systems of High Reliability Organisations (HROs).
Her aim is to develop a risk and safety management framework that allows a sustained, essentially error-free performance. Nadine’s study is conducted in the context of airports’ ground service providers (GSPs) and their ramp resource management (RRM).

Zain Rasab
Zain comes from Slough, UK, has a BSc in Air Transport with Commercial Pilot Training and an MA in International Tourism and Aviation Management. He is an active First Officer flying the Airbus 320 for European charter airlines.
His topic of research is on “Smart technologies’ potential to enhance the digital retail experience”. Zain explores how a ‘captive’ retail environments such as an airport can utilise existing and emerging smart technologies to shape the travellers’ retail experience.
Zain’s study aims to map the air-traveller smart retail journey within an airport and identify existing and emerging technologies that can affect each stage of this journey to subsequently propose smart technology strategies to both airport commercial managers and retailers on how the air-travellers’ airport retail experience can be optimised.

Felix Teifer
Felix comes from Vienna, Austria, and has an MSc in Air Transport Management. He works in the airline business as a Senior First Officer with a major European Airline.
His doctoral research is on “Commercial Pilot Visual Disorientation” and explores all the factors causing a `Black Hole Illusion` in a realistic cockpit simulation.
More specifically, he conducts a flight simulation with complete sets of real-world cockpit crews in a full-motion airline-approved A320 simulator to explore the correlation between different runway lengths and widths and light illumination levels on the vertical and lateral approach path in a `Black Hole Environment` from the Captain´s as well as from the First Officer´s perspective.
Felix's study aims to recommend improvements in flight situational awareness training and operational policies. To reduce human error and further enhance flight safety.

Corina Ujeniuc
Corina has a BSc in Culinary Arts and a MA in Food Business Management at the University of West London. She worked in the hospitality industry then shift to education.
Her doctoral research is on "Evaluating the nutritional status of children in a Hare Krishna primary school that follow a plant-based (Lacto-vegan) diet" and it explores the diet of children in order to see if it is a healthy diet that allows the children to grow and develop. Part of her study is Flavour School, which is a programme that teaches children how to interact with food through their senses.
