Intensive Care: Adult Practice
Overview
The aim of this credit-bearing double module course is to enable you to deliver expert and evidence-based care to critically ill adults with multiple pathophysiological problems, with multi-organ failure.
Course requirements:
- Evidence of study at Level 6 (Degree Level)
- You must be working in an intensive care environment
- Completion of Step 1 CC3N competencies.

The course will provide you with the opportunity to:
- Develop competence and specialist knowledge in the management of the intensive care adult patient
- Critically analyse your own practice and the diverse role of the intensive care nurse in sustaining effective intensive care practice
- Critically examine and scrutinise current issues in care delivery, by critically appraising and synthesising the evidence base towards enhancing patient outcomes and multi-disciplinary team efficacy.
This course is designed for registered nurses working within an adult intensive care environment. You need to have at least 12 months post-qualifying experience, 12 months of which must be within a level 3 intensive care environment. All applicants will normally hold an undergraduate degree from a UK-based university or an overseas qualification of an equivalent standard. Step 1 of National Competencies for Adult Critical Care Nurses must be completed prior to acceptance onto this course.
The course is designed to prepare you to expertly manage the care of a level 3 patient. This is the first of two modules designed to meet the Intensive Care Society (2019) Guidelines for the Provision of Intensive Care Services.
The course is taught using face-to-face lectures, seminars, tutorials, simulation scenarios, and includes online resources. You are required to complete part of Steps 2 and 3 of National Competencies for Adult Critical Care Nurses.
Study days are from 9am to 5pm.

I graduated with honours from alma mater University of Bologna, earning a Bachelors degree in Adult Nursing.
My nursing practice began in acute assessment and progressed through intensive care and critical care outreach, eventually leading to a specialisation in burns intensive care at Chelsea and Westminster Hospital.
Working as a practice development nurse in intensive care ignited my passion for education, and in 2022 I was appointed as a lecturer practitioner at the University of West London, where I teach and lead the ITU course.
Additionally, I hold a joint appointment at the London North West Healthcare Trust as the Lead in Education for Intensive Care Nursing.
I am passionate about critical care, burns and empowering nurses through education.
