Starting your own business

If you are interested in starting your own business here are few questions to consider:

  • Does your business idea solve a problem or meet a need in the market?
  • Are you planning to research your target audience, competitors and industry trends?
  • Are you in the process of drafting a detailed business plan?
  • How do you intend to create a strong brand identity?
  • Have you registered the business?
  • Have you developed a finance strategy?

Starting a business is a process requiring dedication, perseverance and hard work. Therefore, staying focused and learning along the way are keys to succeeding.

Developing entrepreneurial skills

To develop entrepreneurial skills, requires a commitment to lifelong learning - educating yourself through short courses and extensive reading. Networking and learning to become comfortable with taking calculated risks are important entrepreneurial skills. Cultivating problem-solving abilities, being adaptable and using resilience to overcome challenges are key skills in the arsenal of a successful businessperson. Developing confidence to execute your ideas and seeking feedback for improvement will help move your business forward. Volunteering, joining UWLSU societies, relevant part-time work, and becoming a Student Ambassador or Course Rep are ways to develop your transferable skills while at university.

  • Find out more about how you can develop these skills and learn what an entrepreneur is via the Prospects website.
