The 10 new works on ‘The Album of Imaginary Beings’ are based on mythical creatures from ‘The Book of Imaginary Beings’ by Argentinian author Jorge Luis Borges. They are performed by US-based Professor Timothy Schwarz from Rowan University in New Jersey, who was Visiting Professor of Performance at LCM last year.
Head of Composition at LCM Dr Simone Spagnolo said,
This is an exciting collection of solo violin pieces. It includes a variety of styles with a good balance between the frantic and the reflective. Timothy dedicated a lot of time to studying the pieces with the composers, so they are refined from a compositional angle as well as a performative one.”
Timothy agreed to the project as soon as Simone suggested it.
Having worked extensively with living composers - both professionals and students – there is a mutual benefit to performers and composers working closely together. This collaboration was one of the highlights of my time at LCM,”
he explained.
Masters student Sofia Panagiotopoulou commented,
I am thrilled to have contributed to this album. The experience of composing for solo violin, especially for a professional violinist, was a fantastic departure from my usual reliance on virtual instruments. It was an invaluable opportunity and an enriching learning journey.”
The album was a collaborative project across LCM, involving students and lecturers from the BMus Composition, MMus Composition, MMus Composition for Film and TV, and BA Music Management courses.
‘The Album of Imaginary Beings’ is available on all major music streaming platforms.
