Business Aviation professionals and students gather at UWL to discuss career opportunities

The London Geller College of Hospitality and Tourism (LGCHT) held a Working in Business and General Aviation Symposium recently to explore how the Business Aviation (BA) sector can recruit and train the next generation of professionals.

BA is a little-known but indispensable sector that is rich in jobs but has long suffered from a shortage of skills and a need for more workforce. One of the aims of the event was to help construct a short continuing professional development (CPD) online course on the nature and benefits of engaging with BA.
During the morning, representatives from the European Business Aviation Association, the British Business and General Aviation Association, TalentView and the UK Civil Aviation Authority and UWL staff Associate Professor in Aviation Ivan Sikora, Lecturer in Air Transport Management James Goodman, Pro Vice-Chancellor (Business Development) Suresh Gamlath, Dean of LGCHT James Edmunds, and Head of Subject – Tourism, Aviation and Events Dr Elitza Iordanova and Lecturers and Senior Lecturers in Aviation discussed BA in a workshop format, assessing the current situation and direction in introducing the potential offered in employment and influencing society.
During the afternoon, A Level/Level 3, undergraduate and postgraduate students interested in exploring a BA career heard presentations from industry representatives. This was followed by time for discussion then refreshments and networking.
Mini, who is doing an MA in Aviation and International Tourism at LGCHT, said:
I really enjoyed today and learned a lot about business aviation, a new topic for me. It’s been a nice opportunity to connect with people in the industry such and get their contact details."
Natalie Smith, Head of HR at Biggin Hill Airport, said:
It’s been great to be here. The culture at UWL really stands out for me. Everyone is friendly, open, and welcoming. There is a passion for the students’ welfare and for them to translate their learning into a career post-graduation."
