Council manager upskills on the job with a UWL degree apprenticeship
A Hounslow manager is showing the benefits of continuing her education and upskilling while she works during the first year of a master’s degree with the University of West London.
Maddy Gilbert, a skills and employment manager at Hounslow Council, took on the MBA Business Apprenticeship to learn everything from strategy and innovation, managing finances, and global digital business skills.
After a previous role as a training advisor to help young people get the most out of apprenticeships, she jumped at the chance to work towards a qualification of her own and learn new skills as she progresses in her career.
Maddy, said:
At work, it is my team which leads on the council’s apprenticeship pledge so it was important for me to be able to speak from experience and show the benefits of studying later in life to boost your career and opportunities.
Apprenticeships are not just a route for 18-year-olds, I am upskilling and enhancing my career as I work and the MBA is so appropriate to help me demonstrate my abilities as a manager. The skills are transferable I can use them throughout my career.
It is a challenge to juggle full time work in a management role and studying, but I get so much support at work and the University which really helps. I never imagined I would have the opportunity to get a master’s degree without giving up my earnings and that makes me all the more determined to prove myself to my employer."
The University takes on more than 300 higher and degree apprentices each year, helping people train and upskill in business, healthcare, and academic sectors – as well as helping young people get a foot on the career ladder while they study.
Janet Rowson, Head of Degree Apprenticeships at UWL, said:
Degree apprenticeships offer a variety of courses to help people from all ages and walks of life to access education, upskill or completely retrain.
We offer courses in everything from healthcare to business management and the offer is expanding nationally all the time as we look to helping more people become highly skilled in their professions."
