Culinary Arts Management students enjoy guest lecture from alumnus Michael Scholz

Final year BSc (Hons) Culinary Arts Management students at the London Geller College of Hospitality and Tourism at the University of West London had the opportunity to attend a guest lecture by alumnus Michael Scholz recently.

The lecture was entitled ‘New Food Product Development Process and Industry Practices’ and aimed to provide students with a real-world perspective of the new food product development cycle – from concept ideation to market launch. 

After completing a BSc (Hons) in Culinary Arts Management, Michael did a MSc in Food Business Management and is now a successful professional in the food industry. During the lecture, he shared invaluable experiences and insights on the challenges and innovations in food product development. 

Michael emphasised the importance of cross-functional collaboration, consumer research and the regulatory environment. Students were also introduced to the role of sustainability and emerging technologies in shaping the future of food production.

For me, UWL felt like a family unit with everyone supporting each other. I really liked the connections I made, with guest lecturers who came in, the other students and the lecturers who were there for us and helped us make the best of ourselves,” 

shared Michael. 

Reflecting on the lecture, Nathan Vasanthan, Senior Lecturer in Culinary Arts and Food Studies, remarked, 

It is always rewarding to see our alumni return and contribute to the growth of our students. It is inspiring for our students to learn from their journey.

This was a valuable opportunity for our students to connect academia with industry practices, preparing them for the challenges of their future career.” 

Final year student Joshua commented, 

It was a really interesting lecture from Michael. He went into detail about how product development in the industry works and the skills needed to pursue a career in this field.”
