Ealing Wind Orchestra to perform pieces by LCM students at upcoming concert

intro

The Ealing Wind Orchestra will be performing two premieres of music composed by London College of Music student composers on Friday 13 December at the University of West London.

The concert in the University’s Weston Hall will also be a learning opportunity for Recording, Mixing and Production students, who will be recording and filming it to produce live tracks for possible release by UWL’s in-house record label London Noise Records.

Two composition students, undergraduate Sunghoon Lee and recent Masters graduate Katrine Aziz, have participated in a year-long residency with the Ealing Wind Orchestra which will culminate with the premiere of their new pieces at the concert. Throughout the residency, they have collaborated with the orchestra, discussed their ideas with conductor Dave Gordon-Shute, presented their developing sketches and gradually composed their final pieces.

This experience has been exceptional for our students, providing a platform to showcase their work publicly and develop the technical skills needed to write successful pieces for large ensembles.

Their final pieces reflect the hard work they have invested in this residency and the fruitful collaboration between the orchestra and UWL students.”

said Senior Lecturer in Composition Dr Litha Efthymiou.

Katrine, who has just finished her MMus in Composition for Film and Television, said,

It is a really fulfilling experience to have your work brought to life by talented performers.

My piece, 'Marchers' Dance', is a twist on a traditional march, playing with the standard ideas of forward movement that march music creates. I used reversed melodies and rhythms to turn the feeling of forward motion into reversed and circular motion.”

Final year BMus (Hons) Composition (Film/Theatre) student Sunghoon commented,

My piece is called 'Valley of the Moon' which is inspired by a journey in the desert called 'Wadi Rum' in Jordan, also known as 'Wadi al-Qamar' (Valley of the Moon). At the concert, the third movement; 'Night' will be played, which is inspired by the night sky without any light pollution. I am excited for its premiere.”

Third-year Recording, Mixing and Production students Subin, Matthew, Mike, Michael and Sam will be collaborating with the orchestra to record and film the concert. They will set up an extensive microphone collection to capture the rich sound.

The goal is to mix the performance for stereo audio and potentially Dolby Atmos, showcasing our students advanced recording and mixing skills.

This exciting opportunity allows them to push the boundaries of their technical and creative expertise in a professional setting,”

explains Senior Lecturer and Course Leader Dr Dan Pratt.
