Antony Newman

Lead for Simulated Learning and Immersive Technologies
College of Nursing, Midwifery and Healthcare

Having trained at the University of West London, graduating in 2015, Antony began his career in surgical nursing, working across the peri-operative setting. His first foray into education was as the Practice Development Nurse for Surgery across Heatherwood and Wexham Park hospitals. This role allowed him to develop and implement educational programs that significantly improved nursing practices and patient outcomes. Antony then moved to North Wales, where he transitioned into academia at Bangor University, further honing his skills in teaching and research.

Prior to joining UWL as a lecturer, Antony served as the Learning Environment Lead at Frimley Health. In this role, he was responsible for overseeing the clinical education of all student nurses, ensuring they received high-quality training and support.

In February 2023, Antony commenced his role as Lead for Simulated Learning and Immersive Technologies at UWL. In this capacity, he has been instrumental in integrating advanced simulation techniques and immersive technologies into the curriculum, enhancing the learning experience for healthcare students. His leadership and approach in this position earned his team several accolades, including an award for innovative practice in teaching two years in a row.

Antony represents the University at the UK Simulated Practice Learning Group, a national forum for the development of simulated placements for healthcare students. His work in this area has been widely recognised, and he was invited to share his insights at a TEDx talk in early 2024, where he discussed the future of healthcare education and the impact of technology on learning.

Antony has an acute interest in human factors, simulation-based learning and the use of gamification in healthcare. His passion for these areas drives his continuous efforts to innovate and improve educational practices, ensuring that future healthcare professionals are well-equipped to meet the challenges of modern medical practice. He is the course lead for the new MSc Simulated Practice Education course, launching in early 2025.
