Our BA (Hons) Musical Theatre degree will equip you with the skills and experiences required to build a career in the musical theatre industry. 

In addition to receiving comprehensive training in acting, singing and dance, we will help you discover and develop your unique artistic voice empowering you to create your own performance work. 

Throughout the course, you’ll be guided by working industry professionals who have first-hand industry knowledge and insight into what it takes to be successful. 

You will also collaborate with and learn from:

Our aim is for you to graduate with the skills and confidence to enter the industry as a well-rounded and versatile performer with the experience and confidence to create your own career opportunities.

Foundation Year 

The foundation year course is designed to equip you with the skills and knowledge you need to continue onto your Honours degree. You will study a range of subjects that will underpin your future study and also gain valuable experience of university life, with full access to campus facilities. Successful completion of the year allows you to progress straight onto Level 4 of this course. Please note that a £2000 Path to Success bursary is available to all UK foundation year students, which is non-repayable.

Course detail & modules

This musical theatre degree will give you the skills and experiences needed to succeed in today's musical theatre industry. 

You will work at the cutting edge of industry practice, collaborating with highly experienced industry professionals while passionate tutors will guide you through your creative journey as you hone your skills and create new and exciting work. 

Additionally, you will showcase your talents in events including:

  • full-scale musicals
  • fringe theatre
  • tours of schools
  • concerts
  • cabarets.  

You will be prepared for life as a working performer with insights on auditions, self-management, representation and business skills, as well as receiving guidance on essential promotional materials such as headshots, CVs, and showreels. Equity and Spotlight recognise the course.

  • At Level 4, you’ll focus on the core skills of singing, acting and dance before integrating them into performance. 
  • At Level 5, in addition to developing core skills, you’ll explore further performance techniques such as acting for screen, puppetry, voiceover and more. You’ll learn how to create your own works and perform them in the LCM Cabaret Festival and a School tour. 
  • At Level 6, you will perform in full-scale musicals to agents and casting directors in our own on-campus theatre. You will film a professional Showreel in addition to a Showcase opening the door to screen work. 

Additionally, you will have the opportunity to gain the Licentiate of the London College of Music (LCME), earning two qualifications through this course and opening employment opportunities in education.   

As a versatile musical theatre artist, you will be able to carve your own path in this exciting industry and take control of your career.

Foundation Year

There are many reasons for joining a foundation year course; you may not have the exact subjects or grades at A level to meet the entry requirements, you may have been living abroad or want to change direction with your career. Whatever your starting point, the foundation year offers a firm grounding in the skills and knowledge that you will need to get the most from your studies and thrive at University. Successful completion of the foundation year allows you to progress straight onto Level 4 of this course.

Compulsory modules

  • Ensemble Singing Lab

    Ensemble Singing Lab builds a solid foundation in singing skills for musical theatre performance, providing you with an embodied understanding of core principles around sung voice and musicianship in the context of Musical Theatre.

    Through practical classes, you will gain a foundational experiential understanding of vocal production and singing techniques whilst developing ensemble listening and harmony skills by exploring a diverse range of repertoire from around the world.

  • Performance Fitness

    You will learn basic ballet, jazz and body conditioning techniques. Through conditioning classes, you will acquire an understanding of injury prevention, how the body is strengthened and prepared for dance. You will develop an understanding of the importance of nutrition, hydration and safe exercise for performance. You will learn choreography and technical exercises to develop and strengthen dance skill in ballet and jazz.

  • The Actor Begins

    Working individually and in groups you will explore key techniques designed to hone the psychological preparation of the actor alongside of the physical aspect of discovering a character. Through this work, you will develop key skills required of the working actor such as: self-confidence, mental focus, awareness of the body, interrogation of text, creative thought, collaboration with others and awareness of craft.

  • Musical Theatre Skills

    You will explore musical theatre repertoire through analysis and performance. Integrating all three disciplines of singing, acting and dance you will learn and perform songs, choregraphy and script.

  • Show Study

    You will study a specific show from the canon of musical theatre, exploring and researching themes and contexts and performing extracts from the piece.

  • The Jukebox Musical

    The module encourages creativity in the development of a ‘Jukebox’ musical performance.

    You will explore the development of the story through a catalogue of works agreed upon by all participants (suggestions may be put forward by the course team).

Compulsory modules

  • Singing and Musicality

    The aim of this module is for you to gain an understanding of singing technique and music theory. Through practical classes, you will learn about vocal production, anatomy and breath technique by exploring a diverse range of solo and ensemble repertoire. 

    You will develop a solid understanding of music theory appropriate to the musical theatre performer. You will learn basic aural skills to develop your ability to recognise and sing musical intervals. 

  • The Actors Toolbox

    On this module, you will explore a range of acting practitioners and apply their theories to preparation and performance. You will develop key skills such as: self-confidence, focus, awareness of the body, staying present, imagination, listening, relaxation and collaboration. 

    The module considers the stagecraft of how actors work. You will explore devising, improvisation and script work. You will engage in peer-to-peer feedback, self-analysis and responding to direction. Though practical application and self-reflection, you will discover and create your personal ‘Actors Toolbox’ of techniques you can use throughout the course and into your career.

  • Musical Theatre Choreography

    You will develop core dance skills and techniques relevant to Ballet and Jazz. You will develop technical skills alongside artistic interpretation of choreography. You will acquire an understanding of the anatomy, injury prevention, nutrition, hydration and safe exercise for performance.

  • Musical Theatre Performance

    Through integrating song, dance and acting, you will develop your knowledge and understanding of how to create and communicate characters and story. This module places the actor at the centre of Musical Theatre performance.

  • Contextualising Musical Theatre

    You will explore the evolution of Musical Theatre, discover key moments, investigate important figures and provide historical context. This module will look at global perspectives and influences on Musical Theatre as well as current international developments and trends. You will also explore critical and theoretical perspectives on the development of Musical Theatre.

  • The Revue Musical

    Working with a creative team you will work with your peers as a professional theatre company to rehearse and perform a Revue Musical. You will understand and participate in the rehearsal process by replicating ‘real life’ industry practices within the rehearsal room. The Revue Musical will contain a selection of Musical Theatre material and be presented to an invited audience. 

Compulsory modules

  • Style Study

    In this module, you will explore genres within musical theatre and the styles attributed to different writers, composers and choreographers. You will engage with a diverse range of material, to develop a practical understanding of the different techniques or approaches required. You will also explore critical and theoretical perspectives on the development of different Musical Theatre styles and genres.

  • Voice and Movement

    You will explore spoken voice and movement skills and theories with a focus on heightened texts such as Shakespeare, poetry, lyrics etc. You will explore spoken voice through practical sessions which integrate anatomical theory with creative application. Through movement, you will focus on the actor’s awareness and understanding of the body as a tool for the creation of character. You will consider both conscious and unconscious physical choices, creating a greater understanding of the ‘self’ as the centre for all creative decisions.

  • Skills Expansion

    This module encourages you to embrace versatility and broaden your skill set. A range of performance skills will be explored and may be adapted to the skills and needs of the cohort. For example, you could engage with acting-for-camera, puppetry, stage combat, composition, swing skills etc. or a deeper investigation of dance, singing and acting skills beyond those traditionally found in Musical Theatre performance.

  • Creating Theatre

    You will discover the dynamic process of developing and creating original work. Through hands-on experience, you will gain invaluable insight into the process of artistic creation and the power of creating your own work.  

       

    You will conceive and actualise your own artistic endeavour as you create a Cabaret or devise a new musical or play. Writing can be developed around a theme, an adaptation of written texts or known narratives. You may work in small creative groups or solo as you develop the work. You will develop an understanding of dramaturgy as you utilise research skills to explore topics, stimulus, historical contexts and characters. 

     

    You will be invited to perform your work as part of the LCM Musical Theatre Cabaret Festival.

  • Text Transitions

    You will explore challenging texts, complex music and choreography to further develop skill in the communication of character and story.

      

    Engaging with singing, acting and dance technical exercises in sessions, will allow you to approach material critically and creatively, exploring how and why a character moves from speech to song and speech to dance.

      

    Therewill be opportunities to explore solos, small group work (e.g. Duologues/Duets, Trios etc) and ensemble material.

  • The TIE Musical

    Working with a creative team you will devise a Theatre in Education (TIE) Musical. You will gain the fundamental knowledge, skills and understanding needed to create, rehearse and perform an original piece of theatre. By establishing an understanding of the role of Theatre in Education and exploring methods of storytelling, the module culminates in the performance of a devised, high-impact, live production which is toured to local Schools.

Compulsory modules

  • Fringe Theatre

    Collaborating with a Creative Team you will rehearse and perform a small-scale musical to be performed for a public audience with invited agents and casting directors. Using limited sets and costumes, this module will develop your personal creative process and introduce the workings of Fringe Theatre. You will be encouraged to explore text in depth with relation to thought-provoking, potentially provocative themes and issues. In addition to performing, you will take active creative and technical roles within the company, such as Assistant Director, MD or Choreographer, Head of Hair & Costume, Set Designer, Theatre Technician and Stage Manager.

  • Showcase and Showreel

    This module will provide you with the essential marketing materials of a Showreel and Showcase allowing you to demonstrate your skills in both screen and musical theatre performance.  

      

    You will undertake a rehearsal process, culminating in a filmed Acting Showreel and Musical Theatre Showcase. You will receive the footage to upload to relevant digital platforms such as Spotlight and send to agents or casting directors.

  • The Book Musical

    Collaborating with a creative team you will rehearse and perform a large-scale musical for public performance with invited agents and casting directors. Rehearsals and performance emulate that of a professional commercial production. You will utilise the advanced application of your skills developed over the degree as you create and perform your character.

  • Performance Perspectives

    Performance Perspectives connects academic and artist practice and encourages you to develop a specialism. Inspired by an area of interest within Musical Theatre, you will produce an original piece of work substantiated by research. This work can take the form of Choreography, a Musical Theatre Script/Libretto, a Cabaret, or a Dissertation.  

     

    You will be introduced to methods of artistic creation and research before choosing your pathway. Working autonomously with the help of a supervisor you will think critically about your chosen form and may draw from social, political or cultural influences in the creation of your work which will be grounded in relevant literature, research and resources.  

      

    You may be invited to perform your work as part of the LCM New Work Festival.

  • The Emerging Artist

    You will prepare for successful entry into the professional world of Musical Theatre by delving into the intricacies of the industry. You will receive guidance to prepare for the audition process by engaging with visiting industry professionals and participating in masterclasses and workshops. The concept of a 'Portfolio Career' or the 'Multi-Hyphenate Creative' will be explored, encouraging you to recognise and leverage your versatility and strengths across multiple potential roles. This module will introduce basic business skills, financial management and employment legislation so you can understand contracts, and taxation in addition to other relevant knowledge that will facilitate employment. You will create a CV, a ‘rep folder’ and a career plan.

These can include:     

  • A Levels at grades B and B (if you have two A levels) or grades C, D and D (if you have three), or above
  • BTEC Extended Diploma with Merit, Merit, Pass     
  • Access to HE Diploma
  • T Levels

You also need GCSE English and Maths (grade 9 - 4 / A* - C) or Level 2 equivalents

Funding your studies

Foundation year bursary

If you are a UK student joining a foundation year course with UWL, you will receive a £2000 Path to Success bursary to support your studies. This is not a loan and does not need to be repaid. You will receive £500 per year subject to your attendance, engagement and progression through your studies.

Gillian Ford

Gillian Ford is an experienced and passionate performing arts educator specialising in Musical Theatre. With a wealth of experience as an actor, Gillian brings nearly two decades of expertise to her teaching practice. Throughout her career, she has successfully delivered workshops and classes for students of all ages, abilities, and backgrounds.

As a lecturer at the London College of Music, Gillian focuses on enhancing students' performance abilities through a comprehensive range of physical, vocal and textual techniques. She delves into the history of musical theatre, covering key developments and influential figures. Notably, she successfully directed the Level 6 graduate performance of The Addams Family Musical in 2022.

Previously, Gillian worked as a lecturer at ROM Theatre Arts (University of Chichester), leading private singing lessons and modules in Musical Theatre Practice and Ensemble Singing. Her approach involved developing students' technical and interpretation singing skills, and leading various practical performance projects.

With a freelance background, Gillian has made a positive impact on students and organisations, including The BRIT School, Trinity Laban, LMA London, Big Creative Education, Ambassador Theatre Group and Birmingham Stage Company.

Gillian is dedicated to sharing her passion and expertise in musical theatre, guiding students on their artistic journeys and nurturing their talents and aspirations.

After graduating with your musical theatre degree, you will be ideally set to develop a career in a variety of roles. Jobs for musical theatre graduates include:

  • acting or musical theatre
  • community theatre
  • theatre in education
  • applied theatre and therapy (following successful completion of a postgraduate qualification in this area)
  • teaching (following the successful completion of a Postgraduate Certificate in Education programme).

Past UWL graduates have gone on to appear in West End productions including A Strange Loop, Book of Mormon, Jersey Boys, Six, and many more. As well as boasting various links to the industry, the course is affiliated with a creative agency to promote the work of our students.

Our flexible, professionally-equipped performance spaces include Lawrence Hall, a 200-seat black box studio theatre, and Vestry Hall, a classical music performance space featuring a Steinway B Concert Grand piano, concert tuned percussion and seating for up to 150

We have four black box production rooms featuring performance dance floors, ballet barres, wall mirrors and ¾ drapes. All rooms have PA and AV support in all rooms. The digital stage pianos are by Roland.

Media Resource Centre

At our Media Resource Centre (used by all subject areas) you'll find extensive portable audio recording systems, including up to 24 track digital HD recording and portable Focusrite RedNet systems.

There is also video-camera and accessory support, including LED and tungsten lighting systems, track and dolly systems and stedi-cam rigs.

Availability of placements - if you choose a course with placement/internship route we would like to advise you that if a placement/internship opportunity does not arise when you are expected to undertake the placement then the University will automatically transfer you to the non-internship route, this is to ensure you are still successful in being awarded a degree.
