UWL Head of Subject and alumna Dr Dinusha Weerawardane re-elected to ACCA Global Council

Intro

Dr Dinusha Weerawardane, Head of Subject for Accounting and Finance at the Claude Littner Business School (CLBS) at the University of West London (UWL), has been re-elected to the ACCA (Association of Chartered Certified Accountants) Global Council.

Main body

ACCA is the world’s largest global professional accountancy body with 252,000 members and 526,000 future members across 189 countries. Council is ACCA’s governing body, akin to a university’s board of governors, and it is a vital part of how the professional body is run.

Council members are volunteer custodians elected by the global membership to provide overall stewardship of ACCA’s wellbeing.

Each year, ACCA members in good standing from around the world elect their preferred candidates from a pool of nominees. Dinusha was first elected to Council in 2018, re-elected in 2021 and has recently been re-elected for a further term.

On Council, Dinusha provides governance and oversight of the strategy implementation process and insights to shape the qualification. She has also served on Council’s Regulatory Board where she has engaged with lead regulators such as the International Federation of Accountants (IFAC) and Financial Reporting Council (FRC). Advising Council on matters likely to affect the proper discharge of ACCA’s statutory recognitions, Dinusha has monitored the fairness, impartiality, and integrity of their complaints and disciplinary processes, and provided strategic insights into regulatory risks. She serves on the Remuneration Committee, and ACCA’s Global Forum for Education where she advises on the future of educational delivery and assessment.

Dr Weerawardane said about her re-election:

It is an incredibly competitive election on a global scale where you need thousands of ACCA members from around the world to vote for you. I am delighted that I have been re-elected once again so that I can continue my work in advancing the accountancy profession in the public interest.

ACCA is a truly diverse organisation, much like UWL, and I am happy to be contributing to the diversity on Council, by being the only member from the higher education sector. I am also glad to be a role model for my students, motivating them to aim high and break the glass ceiling."
