UWL named University of the Year for Social Inclusion by Daily Mail’s 2024 University Guide

Intro

The University of West London has been named "University of the Year for Social Inclusion" by the first ever Daily Mail University Guide. The University is ranked 46th overall.

The award recognises UWL’s success in improving the career prospects and life chances for its high number of students from underprivileged backgrounds.

Referring to UWL as “One of modern higher education’s success stories,” Alastair McCall, Editor of the Daily Mail University Guide, said:

UWL has one of the most diverse student bodies of any university. Its statistics on social inclusion are seriously impressive.

Among many impressive candidates for our University of the Year for Social Inclusion award, UWL stood out. It changes lives for many of its students, who acknowledge this by delivering some of the most consistently excellent student satisfaction ratings.”

Alastair continued:

This is a university that doesn’t merely pay lip service to social inclusion, it delivers it with every new intake, offering opportunities that many simply would not get elsewhere.”

Peter John Vice Chancellor

Commenting on the award, Professor Peter John CBE, UWL Vice-Chancellor and President said:

I am delighted that UWL has been named University of the Year for Social Inclusion in this newest University Guide.

Equality of opportunity and inclusion is in our DNA, and we are proud of our diverse student community.

We are committed to being a beacon of widening participation, extending the reach of higher education to those who have been traditionally excluded from it.”

More than 60% of UWL students are the first in their immediate family to go to university; all bar two percent are from non-selective state schools; nearly two-thirds come from ethnic minorities vastly under-represented in universities; half come from areas of multiple deprivation and many from the immediate local area.

The award recognises all that UWL is doing to diversify its intake such as working hard to recruit more women into science, technology, engineering and maths, and reaching out to mature students through local libraries. Saturday clubs and a Young People’s Lecture Programme further connect UWL to the communities that many universities struggle to reach.

The award also marked out the University for the excellent support it gives to its students, saying:

These students are supported once they enrol to ensure that their success in getting into university translates into onward achievement in their studies.”

The first ever Daily Mail University Guide will be published on Sunday 10 September. The Guide will be available online at www.mailplus.co.uk/uni and in a supplement published free with the Mail on Sunday.
